I know this precisely because I was in the middle of annotating specimen drawings when the alert came through, and I marked the time in the margin of my field journal before opening the file. The packet had been in transit for 38 years. The images loaded slowly — it was a large file, compressed for transmission, and the receiver in the university's communications tower had to rebuild it piece by piece from the signal that had traveled across 38 light-years of nothing to reach us. While I waited, I made myself tea. I did not check the preview metadata. I have a rule about this: when a data packet is large enough to be worth waiting for, the wait is part of the experience.
